City of Langley – Gymnasium Programs

The Recreation, Culture and Community Services Department staff are excited to re-open the Gymnasium at Timms Community Centre and Douglas Recreation Centre on October 13th for registered activities.

We have implemented new practices and procedures to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19. We are following the guidelines and recommendations set out by viaSports, the Provincial Sport Organizations (Return to Sport Guidelines), the Provincial Health Officer, our local health authority, BCRPA and WorkSafe BC.

  • In line with Phase Three of the viaSport Return to Play Guidelines, Pickleball, Badminton, and Table Tennis are allowing modified play or casual games based on the recommendation of the Provincial Sport Organization, and have established guidelines for the safety of all involved. SINGLE PLAY ONLY as per November 7th PHO order.

  • At this time Basketball will be limited to individual skill development with a max of TWO people per hoop (as per phase Two of the Basketball BC and viaSports Return to Play Guidelines). No scrimmaging or game play will be allowed. We will continue to evaluate (weekly) gymnasium use and modify activity levels based on the direction of the Provincial Sport Organization and the Province of BC.

  • At this time Volleyball will be suspended until further noticed or once Volleyball BC returned back to the Progressively Loosen Phase (Phase 3).

We have assessed all active spaces and determined how many users can safely participate in our facilities at any given time, based on physical distancing requirements as set out by the Provincial Health Officer. We will increase the frequency and cleaning of all high touch surfaces.

For Everyone’s Safety:

  • Pre-registration will be required for all activities.
  • Patrons who are sick will not be allowed entry.
  • Facilities and activities will operate with reduced capacity.
  • We are actively monitoring to ensure that we don’t exceed occupancy limits.
  • Upon entering, answer health questions and clean your hands.
  • Maintain physical distancing of 2 metres apart at all times.
  • Follow directional signage throughout facility.
  • Wash hands frequently.
  • Please bring your own water. Water fountains are closed.
  • Bathrooms open with appropriate physical distancing measures.
  • Please arrive dressed for your activity.
  • Bring only what you need. Leave valuables at home.
  • No access to changerooms/showers.

All visitors are required to wear a mask in the City of Langley facilities. Masks do not need to be worn while exercising or doing an activity. Still, they must be worn in all common areas, including entering & exiting the facility, stairways, hallways and bathrooms.

Frequently Ask Questions (FAQs)

Why do I have to register for a Gymnasium timeslot instead of dropping in?

To ensure the safety of patrons, staff and our community, registration for the gymnasium is mandatory. Registration allows us to track who is in our building and when and to ensure maximum participation numbers are monitored. Controlling the access to a building/facility is a recommendation of the Provincial Health Officer and Worksafe BC.

How has the City of Langley Recreation Facilities changed to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19?

New practices and procedures were created to ensure the safety of our patrons, community and staff. Some of the measures include:

  • Increasing the distance between activities and equipment
  • Minimizing high touch points and gathering places (eliminating equipment, change rooms, water fountains, etc.)
  • Reducing the number of patrons allowed in the gymnasium at one time

In addition to the measures taken above, there is increased COVID-19 related signage in the facility to ensure that all gym users are informed on signs, symptoms and risks of using the facility during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What do I need to bring to my registered Gymnasium timeslot?

Please come prepared to use the gymnasium. We ask that you bring minimal items with you and your own equipment for the designated timeslot. There will be no access to lockers or cubbies. If you need to bring a bag, keep it small.

How do I gain access to the facility for my Gymnasium timeslot?

Customers should arrive no earlier than 10 minutes prior to their registered Gymnasium timeslot. Please wait on the designated physical distancing markers outside of the north emergency exit gymnasium doors.  A staff will welcome you into the facility at your designated time. As you enter the facility you will be reminded to sanitize and wash your hands frequently.

Why are you only offering limited activities in the Gymnasium?

Recreation, Culture and Community Services staff are following the viaSport Activity Chart and gradually implementing gymnasium activities/sports that have completed the Return to Sport Guidelines. The Activity Chart outlines what types of activities that can be considered for facilities as we transition through the various return stages.

Why is the Gymnasium equipment limited?

To help mitigate the transmission of COVID-19, we are eliminating and/or reducing equipment in gymnasium activities. Equipment that is provided are larger items (pickleball nets, badminton poles, etc.) that are not easy for patrons to transport. Please bring your own equipment such as paddles and basketballs, pickleballs and volleyballs will be provided.

Can I use the Fitness Centre during my Gymnasium timeslot?

Unfortunately, you cannot use the Fitness Center during your gymnasium timeslot. The Gymnasium activities are happening outside of Fitness Centre timeslots.

What amenities will I have access to when I register for a Gymnasium timeslot?

When you register for a Gymnasium timeslot, you will have access to:

Washrooms and the Gymnasium. To reduce the amount of high touch points and gathering places, our team has reduced the amenities that patrons historically have had access to. Patrons will not be able to use the lockers, change rooms, showers, water fountains and water bottle refill station, fitness centre and the walking track.

Do I have to wear Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) when I use the gymnasium?

Wearing PPE is not required when entering our facilities or using the gymnasium. The choice of wearing PPE is up to the discretion of the individual.

Facemasks and/or gloves can be worn to help protect you and those around you - you can learn more on the BC Centre for Disease Control website.

What do I do if I notice another gymnasium user who is not following the physical distancing rules or who is displaying symptoms of COVID-19?

If you notice another gymnasium user who is not following physical distancing rules or who may be displaying symptoms of COVID-19, please notify our gymnasium attendant.

What will happen if a gymnasium user shows signs of COVID-19?

If a patron is exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, staff will ask that they do not our facilities and self-isolate for the recommended 14 days.  A note will be made on the users account and they will be unable to register for any Fitness Centre or Gymnasium timeslots until their self-isolation is over.

If a gymnasium user or staff has tested positive for COVID-19 will I be notified?

The City will support Public Health in communicating community transmission occurrences.

Can I cancel my registration for a Gymnasium timeslot?

Yes. To avoid losing your payment, cancellations can be done through email or by calling us 48 hours prior to your scheduled timeslot.
