The City of Langley Recreation, Culture & Community Services Department is pleased to offer a wide range of registered programs for the Active Aging population. All fitness programs are led by BCRPA certified fitness instructors with specialization in 3rd Age and Osteofit. These programs are not offered as drop-in programs, registration is required! Pro-rated refunds will be granted after the program start date up and before the start of the third class.

Get Up & Go
Created in Collaboration with Fraser Health Falls Prevention Initiative, Specialized Geriatric Clinics and OSTEOFIT, this program is an entry level exercise program for older adults with balance and mobility impairments. Get Up & Go is designed to improve strength, balance and coordination as well as functional ability, independence and quality of life.
Suitable for those with no previous experience with resistance training or fitness classes. The majority of this program will be taught sitting in chairs so those with mobility issues are encouraged to participate however, participants must be able to walk independently at least 5 meters.

Osteofit Level 1
This falls prevention program is geared towards those at risk of fractures and falls due to low bone density, osteoporosis or balance issues. Program emphasis is on building strength and improving balance through weight bearing exercises combined with flexibility training to reduce the risk of falls and fractures while improving participants abilities to complete daily activities with confidence and independence.
This program uses chairs for balance exercises only. Participants must be independently mobile and able to stand for prolonged periods of time.

Fit For Life
This advanced mobility class is designed for those who have completed Osteofit Level 1 or those who are regular exercisers looking for more of a challenge. Following a low-impact warm-up, participants will be led through a variety of strength and balance training using a combination of body weight exercises and equipment (dumbbells, tubing, bands, fit-balls). Participants must be fully mobile and able comfortable getting to and from the floor as mat work is included.

Chair Yoga
This beginner level yoga class is practiced sitting in a chair or standing and using a chair for support. Our certified yoga instructor will lead you through a variety of poses aimed at improving your flexibility, improving your balance and strengthening your muscles. Deep breathing techniques will be combined with movements to help relax your body and increase your mind-body connection. No previous yoga experience required.

Gentle Yoga
Following the principles of Hatha Yoga, this gentle exercise program focuses on a healthy mind-body connection while going through the various positions at a slower place with gentle movements. No previous yoga experience is needed as this program offers adaptions for all levels and allows participants to move at their own pace. Classes will include: breathing techniques, strengthening standing poses, floor work, stretching and relaxation techniques.

Pilates - Mat level 1
Restore vitality, invigorate your mind and elevate your spirit in this low-impact class designed to develop muscle balance and postural awareness. Pilates combines elements of Yoga, modern dance and gymnastics to tone your muscles, improve your posture and strengthen your core. Participants must be comfortable getting to and from the floor as mat exercises are included. Beginners welcome!

Are you an older adult looking for support to get physically active?
Choose To Move is a free 12 week program designed to introduce the habit of physical activity into your daily life in ways that make sense to you.
Developed by the Active Aging Society, Choose To Move is not a group fitness class.
Individual Support: In the Choose To Move program, participants will be provided with both individual and group support. Work with a trained activity coach to develop an activity plan that meets your needs, goals, interests and abilities. You choose the activities that you know you will enjoy and are able to do! Activities can range from organized fitness classes (Tai Chi, yoga) to individual activities you do on your own schedule (walking, gardening, swimming).
Group Support: You will also join a group of other Choose To Movers to share successes and challenges in 8 motivational group meetings. With the help of your activity coach and support group, you will find the motivation and accountability you need to make the changes needed to lead a healthier, more active lifestyle.

In partnership with Alzheimer Society of BC, this program is designed for people living with early stage dementia to participate along with their caregiver in a fitness and social activity. 45 minutes of gentle exercises are followed by 45 minutes of social activities designed to be enjoyed in pairs. Registration fees include the cost of the person living with dementia and one care partner.

Are you an older adult wanting to get active? Activage may be for you! The free 12 week group fitness program has been developed to introduce physical activity to older inactive adults. Your group activity leader will lead participants through progressively planned physical activity in a fun, social setting where you can enjoy the company of like-minded individuals. Functional training focuses on improving activities associated with daily living and strengthening the muscles needed for daily activities such as: bending, lifting, walking and stretching. Each class incorporates physical activities that engage participants as well as class discussions and resources to improve over-all health and well-being.

Learn To Play & Practice
Learning how to play Texas Hold'em is not as complex as you may think! Join the Texas Hold'em Poker Club where players new to the game will be taught the fundamentals including rules and basic strategy in a social, fun and laid-back environment. Players already familiar with the game, will be required to join on Tuesdays for practice play before being recommended for Tournament Play on Thursdays. Please arrive at least 20 minutes prior to start time so intake information can be obtained before the 1pm start time. Everything you need is supplied!

Tournament Play
For those who have some Texas Hold'em game play experience and a good understanding of the rules and strategies associated with game play. This is a fun, social afternoon of slightly competitive and highly enjoyable Texas Hold'em Poker. Game play is free, everything is supplied.
Please note: all players must attend Tuesday Learn to Play & Practice sessions prior to being recommended to join Tournament Play.
