Art and Culture Task Group Commissioned the New Works

Langley City, BC – Langley City’s Art and Culture Task Group with the support of Langley City Council welcomed amateur to professional artists to submit works of art for consideration. After reviewing a myriad of submissions, the Art and Culture Task Group commissioned artist Laara Cerman to create a new interactive piece of art, the City Park Glockenspiel.

“The twelve-note (one octave) glockenspiel can be played by people of any age or culture,” exclaimed artist Laara Cerman. “Music is a language that often crosses these boundaries, and the art piece allows people to play from either side.”

The City Park Glockenspiel is made from aluminum tubes, supported by steel and wood, and is reflective of the nearby mountain views and surrounding trees. The artist began work on the glockenspiel in May, completing the piece in mid-August. The interactive piece can be played during regular park hours. The artwork will complement the children's play area and has been installed between the new picnic shelters and Al Anderson Memorial Pool.

“This is an exciting day for our community, especially the City's Art and Culture Task Group since we are celebrating the unveiling of the City of Langley's FIRST interactive sculpture/work at City Park”, said Arts and Culture Task Group Chair, Councillor Paul Albrecht. “Our Task Group wishes to thank Laara Cerman for this incredible addition to our community. We encourage all residents and visitors to enjoy this amazing interactive art piece.”

The official ribbon-cutting ceremony will be on August 31, 2021, at 5:00 pm in City Park, the northwest corner (west entrance off 205 A Street) of Al Anderson Memorial Pool. Council members, Task Group members and the artist will be present for the ribbon-cutting. Members of the public are invited to attend.
