Mayor Val van den Broek

Mayor van den Broek was first elected as a Langley City Councillor in 2014 and, after just four years on Council, she was elected as mayor on October 20, 2018.

Val has been a proud resident of the community for almost 20 years. She has worked in an administrative role within the Federal RCMP and Corrections agencies for 20 years, including as Coordinator at the Langley City Community Police Office for 8 years, and 10 years at the Langley RCMP Detachment. She is a Langley RCMP Auxiliary Constable and the former Vice President of the Langley Crime Prevention Society. This immense experience has given Val invaluable insights which afford her a clear perspective on the social issues facing communities today. 

Val and her husband Rob love travelling, and as an avid photographer, she has thousands of photos which tell the stories of her “off the beaten path” adventures. Closer to home, they can often be seen walking their two rescue dogs on the amazing trail systems in the community.

Val is passionate about her community and embraces her role as mayor as an opportunity to work closely with Council and with other levels of government to continue to move this community forward!

Councillor Paul Albrecht

Councillor Paul Albrecht has lived in the City for 24 years with his wife Christine. They have four children, three boys and a girl, and have one very independent cat. Paul was elected in 2014 to his first term in office. He loves to play hockey and enjoys cycling, traveling and spending time with his family. Paul loves the City of Langley because it has everything a person needs within a reasonable distance and it is a great place to raise a family. The community is unique because it has all the amenities one needs, yet retains the small town feel.

Councillor Teri James

Teri, her husband Bob and their four children moved to Langley City from Victoria in 2001 and immediately fell in love with the community. She soon became the Executive Director of the Downtown Langley Business Association and in 2005 became the newest member of Langley City Council.

Teri has been working for the DLBA since October 2001 and has sat on numerous panels, committees and advisory Boards in this role. Working in the downtown core for seventeen years and serving three terms on City Council from 2005 to 2014 has provided her with much insight regarding the needs and challenges facing Langley City.

In September 2017, the DLBA was awarded Langley City’s tourism contract, Discover Langley City, and she now oversees both the Downtown Langley Business Association and Discover Langley City as Executive Director. As a result of her vast experience in this community, she has gained a genuine understanding of the issues around homelessness, affordable housing, the importance of rapid transit in our community and the pressure on our fragile infrastructure.

James brings to the table her passion for the community and it is of vital importance to her that we all keep this community vibrant and maintain the quality of life for everyone for years to come.

Councillor Gayle Martin

Councillor Gayle Martin has lived in Langley City for 30 years and will be serving her tenth term as Councillor (28 years). She has a son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren and couldn’t be happier. She enjoys spending time with her family, especially on her son’s boat and loves to travel and volunteer in the community. Councillor Martin loves living in the City of Langley because there is such a sense of community here.

Councillor Nathan Pachal

Whether through his blog or by working with other members of Council, various community groups, and regional and city committees, Nathan has worked hard to bring forward awareness around intersecting components of affordable, sustainable, healthy, happy, and accessible community design.

Over the years, he has written thousands of blog posts on these theme, and has helped bring world-renowned urban design speakers to the community.

He has appeared in print, radio, and television talking about land-use and transportation issues in our region.

As a strong supporter of agricultural and green spaces, he authored a report on the Agricultural Land Reserve entitled “Decade of Exclusions? A Snapshot of the Agricultural Land Reserve from 2000-2009 in the South of Fraser.”

He believes that we need a diverse transportation system that allows people to take transit, cycle, walk, or drive throughout the entire region. He co-authored a report —“Leap Ahead: A transit plan for Metro Vancouver”— to bring awareness to the importance of accessible transit networks.

In 2010, He completed the SFU & City of Surrey Transportation Lecture Program and presented on “Complete Streets”.

Councillor Rudy Storteboom

Councillor Rudy Storteboom is born and raised in the Fraser Valley and has made his home in Langley City since 1984. He lives in the downtown core and serves on his Strata Council at Paddington Station.  Rudy is happy to have family and many life-long friends living nearby, here in Langley City. 

Currently, Rudy is serving for his third term on Langley City Council. He has represented our community on many city committees (for over 20 years), supported a wide variety of local events, served as a Director at Metro Vancouver, is currently a member of the Rotary Club of Langley, the Langley Volunteer Bureau and as a Director at the Langley Lodge.

Rudy enjoys going for walks in the downtown core and attending events in the community as well as connecting with friends and neighbours over coffee. Rudy believes that all residents can provide meaningful input and should be encouraged to respectfully engage local government to ensure openness and accountability. Rudy Storteboom is committed to securing a better quality of life for the residents of Langley City.

Councillor Storteboom says that ‘The City of Langley provides me with a full and happy life that presents new opportunities for personal development, every day. It’s the people who live here that make my life so rewarding and I am proud to call Langley City my home.”

Councillor Rosemary Wallace

Councillor Rosemary Wallace lives in the Downtown Core of Langley City with her husband of 34 years, Keith. She values the importance of community and inclusion and has volunteered many years coaching girls soccer, facilitating arts programs, the protection of the environment and helping with social causes. Throughout her many years, she has sat on a number of committees as a School Trustee and City Councillor, representing committees for the environment, children and families, The Human Dignity Coalition, First Nations, Langley Arts Council, recreation and culture, The Christmas Bureau and Christmas Parade. Rosemary is passionate about seeing that the citizens within a community are valued and are given opportunities to have the best quality of life through recreation, sport, the arts , trades and entrepreneurship. Being a mother to seven children, grandmother and second oldest of twelve children has taught and continues to teach the value of the individual. Rosemary looks forward to being a part of the continual growth of the City and affording citizens the best quality of life and experiences.
